One thing I'd be concerned about is that upstream wxPython only tracks the very latest wxWidgets (and in fact, often gets ahead of the officially released branch, although the wxPython developer is also a wxWidgets developer). This means wxPython 2.6.x is effectively unmaintained upstream. That may or may not be an issue, but it may end up easier overall to work to get problems fixed in 2.8.x.
