new upstream releases for any ABI breakage.
If upstream changes its mind and starts doing shared libraries, you are
in trouble. So it is better, in my opinion to work with upstream to try
to have shared libraries, than try to do your own, except when you are
sure that upstream is dead and nobody will restart the project.
Agreed, you should always ask upstream but in some cases, upstream is
either dead or simply refuses todo dynamic libs (plib for example).
