beryl offers more features than compiz and is a community based project. For what I've heard it's difficult to send patches to compiz devs.
I had the impression that Kristian did not have too many problems getting fixes into compiz. It is true that David Reveman has long-term
plans (which may interfere with one-off quick fixes) and high quality standards for the patches he accepts.
Many of the things done in beryll are just silly though. E.g.
yet-another-config-system, or plugins-not-compatible-with-compiz.
