William, I've been editing your post but the instructions do not seem to work for me on Fedora 26. Did you try them on a fresh install to confirm they work? The only fix I could figure out was to make a ~/.xinitrc file with 'openbox' in it, and to start openbox from a tty login using 'startx'. What else is missing from your instructions?
