Just a heads up: after installing the

In my case, symlinking  /usr/lib/sendmail --> /usr/sbin/sendmail
fixed the problem.

There is instead an entry in /usr/lib; "sendmail.sendmail" which is linked to /usr/sbin/sendmail. Also the man pages no longer work if you type; "man sendmail" You have to use "man sendmail.sendmail".

Do you have postfix installed on the same host? sendmail.sendmail is an indication that postfix.sendmail possibly exists and that an alias or softlink is used to define the current one.
