What it turns out to have been was an option set false in the 
about:config screen.  After that it installed just fine. This really 
should have been available in the prefs menu, but isn't.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules.  I do use spamassassin too. :-)
