8.0 support sucks b/c from what I can tell there are about 5 people on
the planet using 8.0. It was not a widely installed release b/c a lot of
people were waiting for an 8.1 at that point and then when 9 came out
they jumped to that, instead.

yum is tricky for 8.0 b/c of the rpm 4.1 vs rpm 4.0.4 thing - yum 2.0.X
doesn't work with rpm 4.1 b/c of something missing from the rpm
bindings. So you can use yum 1.0.X with librpm404-python installed.

However, there are lots of folks who wanted to upgrade to rpm 4.1.1 -
which ameliorates the rpmdb lock up problems. yum 1.0.X and rpm 4.1.1
don't get along so much but yum 2.0.X and rpm 4.1.1 do. So if you
upgrade to rpm 4.1.1 you need to upgrade yum to 2.0.X. So 8.0 has been a
bastard release where you have to play games with what version of rpm
you're using vis-a-vis the rpm-python applications.

I disagree - I'd be curious about taking some web server statistics to
find out if 8.0 is being used at all. How many people are left still
supporting 8.0? How much work are they willing to put into it? I know I
don't have any 8.0 boxes anywhere and therefore have very low interest
in spending time on it.
