A Pentium 4 processor is compatible with the i686 build (the i686 instruction set is actually pre-pentium 3). You were using the correct install media. You might have better luck using the Live CD disk, booting into the graphical environment, and then installing to your harddrive. The instructions to do that are clearly given once you have the disk booted up.

The Live CD gives you a smaller install, which may not have the problems of the DVD. You can then install any of the DVD software using the PackageKit Add/Remove program once you're running from your harddrive.
