It's been a while and this could be one of those things that is lost to
history.  ISTR posting a very similar change years ago and the issue
raised was what happens with 3rd party modules (ie, NVIDIA or some other
company) that are installed in /lib/modules/<ver>.  IIRC with my change,
and with yours, those drivers would be removed.  A user may or may not
want that to happen and so it is unclear whether or not the modules
directory can be safely removed.

My counter argument at the time was that users should know what they're
doing :) but as we all know, users make mistakes.

I don't think we should do this yet.  Let's think about the consequences
of 3rd party modules.
