You should see the hoops people go through to make their controllers work,
either installing user-space drivers, or finding out how to solve the problem
by installing the right package:

99% of users wouldn't question why the driver is in another package once they
know it's in another package. Took me about 20 minutes to figure out why my
controller wasn't working because I couldn't even believe that there wouldn't
be a driver installed out of the box.
