I'd don't have your issues.  And, I don't recall the previous behavior. 

But, what you could do is find a "Window Decoration" which better suits your taste.  One
that may be of interest is "Dark-Translucent".  This decoration will draw a highlight around
the active window.  You can also, just like any decoration, increase the size of the window
border.  A larger border can make it easier to differentiate between windows.
