My workaround is simple-mtpfs, which mounts the device as mtp instantly.

Thanks, Sinan, simple-mtpfs works great. So it's definitely a kio-mtp issue. There are several bug reports of several issues with kio_mtp. The one that I found closest to my issue is linked below.
PS: - the bug tracker shows the kio-mtp versions should be 4.xx.x whereas latest kio-mtp version is 0.75. I wonder if this renumbering was part of frameworks 5.
