When the panel was frozen, it was frozen. Totally. It could have been painted on the screen, for how unresponsive it was. Before freezing... I don't remember, and right now I cannot log out from the current "gnome+x.org" session. I have some quite urgent work to do on this machine, and if I log out I lose some hours' work.

One thing that very likely was happening is that when I got those problems, there was _another_ user logged in, using a default (i.e. + wayland) Gnome session. May this have some relevance?
