Wow, NIS; haven't seen that in a while.  What does "getent passwd" tell
you?  How about "grep '^passwd' /etc/nsswitch.conf"?  At least with SSSD
in its default configuration, nothing will have access to a complete
user list unless it does an LDAP query directly and maybe whatever
components that handle NIS do the same.  It's not generally feasible to
just keep an updated user list hanging around on every client machine,
though of course SSSD has a configuration setting to do it.
