Wow, NIS; haven't seen that in a while. What does "getent passwd" tell you? How about "grep '^passwd' /etc/nsswitch.conf"? At least with SSSD in its default configuration, nothing will have access to a complete user list unless it does an LDAP query directly and maybe whatever components that handle NIS do the same.
