Thanks, I see now that it does look like what I know as a mapping pin.
And I was trying to work out what was in the syringe!

Thanks again, that is quite interesting.
But as you suggested it seems rather out-of-date.
I don't see anything remotely like
Workspace Appearance -> Window Decorations -> Configure Buttons
(which would presumably have told me what the different buttons mean)
in my System Settings.
The nearest I can get is
Appearance -> Application Style -> Window Decorations
where there is a screenshot with Configure Buttons in it,
but no indication how to get there in real life.
