Thanks for the reassurance.

But I'm still slightly puzzled by the fact that
if I run dovecot/imap on a remote host
then - sometimes at least - as I click on each email in KMail
I get the dreaded message "Retrieving Folder Contents"
and have to wait for 20 seconds or more (sometimes for ever)
before I can read the email.
This never happens with a local imap server.

I must admit this seems much better now than it used to be,
so I shall start trying a remove server again;
though the "replication" option sounds rather attractive.
