Sometimes only one of my virtual desktops goes black, switching to another
virtual Desktop (CTRL Function key) all looks fine.
Like you I do a kquitapp plasmashell and restart it.

Out of curiosity, what video driver is in use for these bonked systems?
I've found what appears to be a video memory leak in Nouveau, but only
in Plasma.
