Well, for me at least, the killall plasmashell ; plasmashell is only meaningful when the entries on my systray disappear or when the background images go to black. When my system hits the "freeze" no keyboard input is possible.
I've found I am able to usually break out with ALT-F2 - sometimes it takes 10, 15 or more times, but eventually I get the command box.
