This may or may not be relevant/helpful.

I run a 2 screen desktop and occasionally the background on the secondary screen will be lost and I'll have only black.  I can move windows on the screen and they work fine.

To get the background back I simply run...

killall -9 /bin/plasmashell ; /bin/plasmashell --shut-up &

which is in a shell script.
