I have been using this on a 32-bit laptop with SL6x for perhaps 2 years,
but I don't have it actually running at the moment; I'm sending this
from an SL7 box.
The libwebp.so.4 problem is newish - libwebp.so.5 seems to be what is
available now, and I recall a problem with the kde-runtime package, but
what I have works.

I'm sorry I hadn't checked to see if the repos were the same. I suspect
that trying to install the full set of kde packages will still give
trouble, but enabling the testing repo might help.
I'll add this reference to a recent and related post, to bring things
