Simple solution: I reverted to the nouveau driver. It's become so good
that I'm thinking the proprietary driver doesn't really give me much of
an advantage anymore. If my desktop-switch cube animation, "cover
switch" on alt-tab, and the oh-so-necessary wobbly windows work, I'm
happy... and with nouveau, politically correct as well.
