Have had numerous times where my kde plasma 5 desktop screen would just freeze up (although if sound was playing, like a video or streaming something, you could still hear it). And sometimes you would see a few squares on the desktop that were together (not a whole lot) that were different color or whatever than the desktop. Pretty updated desktop, like 2 years old or so, lots of Ram, and using nouveau graphics driver.
