Re: Why Firefox is not a good choice of browser for a KDE/Plasma-based product

I had to stop and think about this for a bit...

Everyone had something valid to say. I think the important question is
who is going to be your target audience for the live cd.

-----------------------------------------------------
If you're talking about us,
the regular subscribed to this mailinig list kde user
-----------------------------------------------------
We all know about the shortcomings of Konqueror or
Rekonq. And we know that we can install an alternative browser. We are all convinced as to how great kde is as a desktop environment and if we need to use the live CD we would more than likely be prepared to live with the shortcomings of the browser and install the alternative if required.

-------------------------------------------------------
If you're talking about the uninitiated,
those new to kde or fedora or linux or any combination
of the the three.
-------------------------------------------------------
The browser experience can make or break a users experience. If a new user boots up the kde live cd and finds that they are not able to fully enjoy their favorite website then many will reject what is offered by the CD. It is a hard enough sell without Flash installed (understandable given the licensing issues and Fedora's policy,) but if the browser renders in an unacceptable way, or crashes.....

Besides all that.... KDE has not worked well on older systems for a very very long time. What I mean by that, is as quick as it should. That being said and regarding relatively newer systems who uses CDs anymore. I know that it is a source of pride for Linux distros to fit in the most features in as compact a space as possible, but I have to ask, is that really relevant when it comes to KDE. Wouldn't it be better to have a live DVD, instead of a live CD. And you can then give the users of kde / plasma live a choice: Libreoffice or Calligra; Konqueror or Rekonq or Firefox. Maybe through in a few multimedia players for good measure.

Anyway.... that's my 2₵ worth

Eli
