For testing stuff, I run KDE in a VM allocated with 1.5G of memory. No problems memory wise for what I use it.

Assuming you have the disk space, install both of them and then move to the one that suits your needs. On my "work" machine I've got a few Desktop Environments installed and when I have some troubles with KDE I switch to GNOME and I'm quickly happy with KDE again. :-) :-)

One thing that *may* be of value to you is to run a KDE desktop but use lightdm as the Display Manager. Not something I've tried....but lightdm may use less memory than kdm. Again, I'm just speculating.

The only time I reboot my system is when the kernel is updated.

Mar 01 08:49:13 Installed: kernel-3.13.5-200.fc20.x86_64
Mar 07 06:01:33 Installed: kernel-3.13.5-202.fc20.x86_64
Mar 11 06:43:09 Installed: kernel-3.13.6-200.fc20.x86_64
Mar 29 06:26:57 Installed: kernel-3.13.7-200.fc20.x86_64

Shows the late updates to the kernel under F20.
