Assuming you have the disk space, install both of them and then move to the one that suits your needs. On my "work" machine I've got a few Desktop Environments installed and when I have some troubles with KDE I switch to GNOME and I'm quickly happy with KDE again. :-) :-) One thing that *may* be of value to you is to run a KDE desktop but use lightdm as the Display Manager. Not something I've tried....but lightdm may use less memory than kdm.
