You said:

akonadi-mysql should be installed by default, so I'm curious how you
ended up without it. ??
(if this is a not-so-uncommon occurance, perhaps we need to rethink how
the packaging is done)
I had a system lacking akonadi-mysql when I've recently updated from Fedora 15
to Fedora 17 using install DVD. Maybe it is something that was missed on a rpm
required list when packages were split ?
That case should be handled, akonadi.spec packaging includes:
%package mysql
Summary: Akonadi MySQL backend support
# upgrade path
Obsoletes: akonadi < 1.7.90-2
Requires: %{name}%{?_isa} = %{version}-%{release}
...
which means, anyone with akonadi prior to 1.7.90-2 installed, should get
akonadi-mysql pulled in on upgrade.
