Some other suspects:
* you mentioned using Infinality font patches, is this reproducible
without those?
* does desktop effects (on/off) make any difference?
I had problems with infinality, and gave up after receiving 0 response:

I see 1 response. :) seems infinality configs affect the default Sans
font (ie, that changed your view from DejaVu to Liberation, and explains
the differences you saw)
