Well there goes the "gmail" hypothesis then .. :) I have IMAP to a personal dovecot, a couple gmail addresses, and one exchange server (via IMAP). So it's hard to tell what causes what. But this is apparently a general issue with kmail / akonadi. (Even if any of the server behaves badly, the old kmail was certainly robust enough for it. I'm still using one on a different laptop that connects to same set of servers / accounts and it doesn't have problem).
