This situation continued until last night.  After the latest upgrade, which 
contained a lot of kde packages, the 13-92 kernel works, which seems to 
confirm my suspicion that something was out of sync.  It looks as thought the 
new kernel was "ahead" of the kde requirements in some way.  Strange.
