I've no idea. The fact that that question even needs to be asked speaks
volumes. We have ALSA, Pulseaudio and Phonon (and maybe more). Expecting
that a non-specialist user will understand the role of each of these
things and how they relate to each other is just unreasonable. If a DE
provides a Settings dialogue for sound configuration, it should be able
to deal with the *whole* problem in an integrated manner. The Display
dialogue provides a good example (provided your video card is supported
of course).
