I tested a couple, gmail-plasmoid and the Service Monitor, Using the "add widgets" option, both download installation and local file installation fail with no error reported. The downloaded file was in: /home/blah/.kde/tmp-localhost.localdomain/ I'll do some more testing and try and get some more verbose output, maybe start plasma from a shell will help.
