Konqueror as root: warning background colour?

Hi again:  I'm still running f12 only intermittently on this box so 
progress is slow.  Since the above, but maybe not because of it, as a 
normal user my konqueror ikons in the panel and menu look active but 
don't deliver.  I can only get a working konq window by 'kdesu 
konqueror' and then either giving or 'Ignoring' the root password.  The 
colours differ, as I wanted.  But how do I get working konq ikons back, 
and in file browser default mode?
