I'll be dropping newer phonon-4.3.50-based packages into kde-testing soon. These have been in -unstable for awhile, and by all accounts, should be better. These include the new pulseaudio-integration done by colin guthrie/mandriva. Along with phonon, the f12 repo, will include a newer pulseaudio-module-x11 package, which includes the device-manager pa module for enhanced enumeration of pa backend devices (with it, you'll get to see/specify the hardware pa is talking to, not just "PulseAudio").
