I'd recommend not using fish. sftp is the real protocol. fish is 
a hack if the ssh server has sftp disabled. sshfs+autofs (here) 
can be a little slow, but for common servers, having it 
accessible to my filemanager (it tends to be zsh) is well worth 
it.
