That got sound started, but then I had the situation where a track would start to play, then race on to the end of the track, producing only rapid clicks. It turned out to be an alsa bug - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=514213 The work-around is to edit /etc/pulse/default.pa, change, ... load-module module-hal-detect to load-module module-hal-detect tsched=0 which kills off the existing pulseaudio daemon so it restarts and reads the config update.
