F10 kde logout problems

Well I did as you suggest and I can reboot or logout or shutdown once but as 
soon as I log in again and try any of the above again it fails.  If I <ctr alt 
f2> and stop X it will go back to the login screen (kdm) I an I can either 
reboot shutdown or login from there.  Seems like something is consistently 
screwing with the above mentioned files.  Do you think backing up the entire 
.kde directory and logging out and in again might solve the problem as Anne 
says?
