OK, thanks for the reply.  *Something* nuked /etc/resolv.conf

May be coincidence, but three NetworkManager packages had just been 
upgraded.  I reverted and got things working, then repeated the upgrade. 
  The internet's still there.

The segfault is still in dmesg.
