Actually tried that but other 32 bit dependencies are required. So I just 
installed the static version removing the 32 bit mimicking the directory 
structure in the rpm and added

echo "skype 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

to rc.local

Seems that everything is working OK. So I can live with it for the time being.

It is crap that they haven't put out a 64 bit version.

:) Yeah right like I'm gonna tell my Mom (who lives half way across the world 
whose place of work runs Windows and only allows skype to be installed because 
of communications happening across port 80) we can't chat on skype anymore 
because of some ideology regarding a machine. Sure OK uh huh :)
