ejecting usb devices (aka ipods)

Well, I know that. But in the past (KDE3) this worked. And it is, lets 
say not straight forward, to disconnect a device which claims not to do 
so. Imagine an unexperienced user. What would this user do?

May be there is a clever dbus/udev rule to avoid this situation.
