Hrm, yeah - the plugins are opensource, but the comments are sent to the
"mothership" for checking and the mothership is closed source.

I haven't been able to find a completely open source spam prevention
service - is there one?

Mollom does seem to have a good privacy policy:

but then, so does Akismet:
