Dogtail does work quite well, though you are right about it not getting enough love. The version in Fedora isn't too terribly old, but will be getting updated in the near future, after I make a long-overdue upstream release. I like your idea and I think it has a good chance of working. You ought to be able to get a preliminary script working just by using the recorder - although, be warned: scripts straight from the recorder don't always work perfectly. They generally get you at least 90% of the way.
