Re: New scim version in Zu Yin IM is broken

Hi Tina,

Thank you for your reply.

I would like to explain the fact that there are many characters which in sense a same Hanzi/Kanji/Hanji. It is the decision of Unicode authority that they are recognised as different characters and have their own codepoints.

For example, there is 說 and 説 who knows Chinese understands there are the same word actually, the computer doesn't.

According to your information, I think the each pair of characters are with different codepoint. For the symptom of having one of each pair being as garble characters might be since missing a font for them.

As my previous experience, the garble characters are in GB18030 character range standard. However, there is no GB18030 capable font in Fedora currently to display that from the box. (FYI, RHEL5, a enterprise edition of Linux from Red Hat, includes a commercial font called Zhong Yi Song 18030 which does that.)

You might ask the question, 'Why those garble (18030 standard) characters suddenly appears in the list after version update?' This is because possibly originally Zu Yin doesn't support a narrower range of characters but the author enhanced that to a wider range in the latest release. Therefore, when the latest input module provides those new included characters and the system doesn't have a font to display that, it becomes garble characters.

My suggestion is, get a font which support wider range of characters by yourself and install to the system, or using our latest RHEL5 subscriptions.

Anyways, as long as you can select that, it is not Zu Yin's problem. If the reader's system has fonts cover those characters, the reader should be able to read that. I believe most of the characters had there 'same character with different strokes' usable in Fedora system. Use that and avoid to use those garble characters shouldn't be a big problem for most formal communication in Chinese.

Please feel free to ask question if you need more explanation.

Best Regards,
Caius

Hi Caius,

Sorry for replying late. Please see below my testing result:

I can actually 'select' the brick characters by pressing the number key on the
keyboard. However, They show up as brick characters instead of the actual
characters I want. And I found that the actual characters I want are now in
other positions in same/other pages. (Please see sttachment)

To be specific, here're some examples (also see same attachment):

Character 假:shown as brick character in 0.5.7-2.1 (4th position, page 1)
                       shown as 假 in 0.5.6-7 (1st position, page 1)

Character 設:shown as brick character in 0.5.7-2.1 (0 position, page 4)
                       shown as 設 in 0.5.6-7 (2nd position, page 1)

Character 說:shown as brick character in 0.5.7-2.1 (2nd position, page 1)
                       shown as 說 in 0.5.6-7 (1st position, page 1)

Hopefully my explanation can help. Thanks!

Hi Tina,

Thank you very much for your information.

Before any judgement, I would like to gether further data about the
problem of it from you.

When the candidate window pops up with those numbered brick characters,
could you actually 'select' those characters by pressing the number key
on keyboard?

The main difference between current 5.7 and latest 5.6 is 5.7-2 made a
patch on resetting the candidate list to accurately reflecting the
current candidate list.

In short, as long as all the numbered brick characters are selectable,
the problem is not on the SCIM, is because the system missing font for
those characters.

FYI, the Unicode coverage of SCIM is different to the Unicode coverage
of fonts in the system. IMHO, to match it is possible but not in
foreseeable future development list.

Hope this help. Please kindly let me know if you could select those
characters?

Caius

Hi,

I did yum update on 2007-05-10 for fc6 and found Zu Yin IM is broken (Please
see attachment). Broken version are below:
scim-tables-0.5.7-2.1.fc6
scim-tables-chinese-0.5.7-2.1.fc6

Then I reinstalled the old version back and Zu Yin worked again.
Old version are below:
scim-tables-0.5.6-7.i386.rpm
scim-tables-chinese-0.5.6-7.i386.rpm
It looks like the problem is in the new version. Could you help me to look at
it? Thanks a lot.
