Toped 0.9.0 is in Fedora Repositories.

I have tested on ATI (on F9)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon
Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

Your workaround did the job. Congratulations :)
