I run it as a non-root. I get much better results as a root:

# ./try.sh
SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started
SASL username: gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external,cn=auth
SASL SSF: 0
adding new entry "cn=module,cn=config"

SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started
SASL username: gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external,cn=auth
SASL SSF: 0
adding new entry "olcDatabase=perl,cn=config"

adding new entry "dc=perl-example,dc=com"

However the server sometimes segfaults as you reported.
