As the %check section doesn't work on EPEL 4 and 5, I'm suggesting the following block to use instead: %if 0%{?fedora}%{?rhel} > 5 %check make test %endif And the %{fixperm} thing maybe doesn't exist on EPEL 4 as well, there could be chmod -R u+w $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/* get necessary.
