System Log Monitor

Hi,

I am kind of new to open source programming and Linux (this is actually my first mail in any open-source mailing list). I am trying to design a software which can classify and store logs from different systems. It will be a client-server system, so that someone from the server can monitor the logs of different systems. I tried to do some research on the logging of data in fedora, but couldn't find many helpful sites. So I would be grateful if someone could tell me the working of the logging system in Fedora (briefly).
Secondly, there are some log files in the directory /var/log which couldn't be displayed as text. I used the System Logging software provided in System Tools to open them. But I would want to open them through my software, any idea how to do that?

Looking forward to replies. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Arnab
