FYI attached is an email exchange from the debian-java mailinglist on this same subject. Michael Koch is a gcj and GNU Classpath hacker and Dalibor Topic is a Kaffe hacker. Obviously as GNU Classpath maintainer I am also biased and would call it after the classpath project. Please feel free to call it the "Fedora Classpath Community Project" if you like. But maybe "fedora-gcj" is more appropriate since you are currently building everything to native with gcj anyway. If you need some infrastructure to collaborate on any fedora packaging initiatives around gcj/classpath, like a wiki setup, quicker then the restructuring of the fedora project guidelines takes then we are happy to offer you space on our http://developer.classpath.org/ machine (in the understanding that it will migrate back to the official fedora mothership when it is ready of course). Yep. It is in my opinion simply rude to try to rub off Sun's trade marks, b= eside being an unnecessary legal risk. Just like I think Sun's pretty stupid when= they desperately try to market their proprietary software as 'open source', I th= ink it's equally stupid to try to pass free software off as non-free. Remember,= like GNU is *not* Unix(TM), GNU Classpath/Kaffe/Gcj are *not* Java(TM). If anything, they are better, in my biased opinion, so there is no need to associate them with the negative, and by now pretty meaningless, legally du= bious J-brand. I personally prefer to use the terms 'Classpath community' or 'fre= e runtimes' to refer to the positive future of the platform :)=20 These terms don't come with trade mark use restrictions, and moreover are n= ot generally associated with all the negative connotations the term 'Java(TM)'= has to a lot of people in the free software community.[1] Recently I've talked to a few people trying to run some 'how Sun could try = to excert legal pressure if they wanted to' scenarios past me in private, and = most of them involved Sun using trade marks to that end. So I am no fan of givin= g Sun a huge bat to smack one with, even though I believe them to be benevolent i= n general. cheers, dalibor topic [1] Non-free, slow, limited, resource-intensive, dubious licensing ... =20 --=20 To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-java-REQUEST@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with a subject of "unsubscribe".
