I'd suggest referring to one of Randy Bias' (Cloudscaling) as this was where we (CERN) heard of the idea. The reference we've made from the original CERN paper http://cds.cern.ch/record/1457989/files/chep%202012%20CERN%20infrastructure%20final.pdf?version=1 is to http://www.slideshare.net/randybias/architectures-for-open-and-scalable-clouds.
