I did some brctl delbr and addbr just earlier today and it worked as
expected. Okay, that's been on a Scientific Linux 6.3, but they don't
change kernel options when rebuilding RHEL... ;)

Yes it seems RHEL 6.3 supports this fine
and the user said he just had to do:

> [root@kvm-cs-sn-10i nova]# modprobe -r brcompat
> [root@kvm-cs-sn-10i nova]# modprobe bridge
> [root@kvm-cs-sn-10i nova]# brctl show
> bridge name	bridge id	STP enabled	interfaces
