From my understanding, these are blade servers; there is no "local" hard drive - everything is either from a SAN (EBS) or from S3. ÂAnd yes, sometimes s3-backed systems experience I/O latency.
there are 2 options for the __AMI__Â
S3 backed AMI
EBS backed AMI
After you spin up you instance it there is a local storage involved in the game. You can ask Amazon on the public forum about it.
