I presume it's Xorg and not Wayland based? It still could be an issue with slim. the RPi driver is a 3D accelerated only driver, the 2D Xorg stuff is emulated via glamor. By removing mesa drivers you're basically going from a fully accelerated driver to a blitted frame buffer.
